Is excellent image & sound overkill?

I have done

a/b tests
comparing 2 samples
alternately for quality
of sample or equipment

of standard cd & highest resolution (24/96) dvd sound for the same
record pressing

, on the best equipment of a high end store.
There was no discernable difference between the two.

I cannot in store compare standard & high definition images since
most show only standard images upconverted.
Much satellite & broadcast HD is also merely upconverted.

As I age, my ability to discern differences should deteriorate.
So for me, very good analogue may be as good as I can appreciate.
