Height Matters

Few sound systems allow for height information. A review of a
said
that the drums sound lower on the sound stage than Cannonball's sax.

My disk of Stephen King's The Mist is supposed to with earphones provide height (ambiophonic), although I didn't notice the difference.

Chesky Records on its newest disks uses the Dolby Digital 5.1 format for height. The center & bass channel become the upper left & right front sound sources. A realignment of speakers is required.

The newest high definition sound formats allow for height- but only as options. Likely will be as rare as dad on standard dvd's.

IMAX uses a center upper speaker, although except in the pre-feature demo, I have not noted its presence.

IMAX also uses height in the video field so as to fill the field of vision. At home that might mean a return to the 4:3 screen. Certainly vertical motion
as with a rocket launch benefits from increased visual height.
